The Sound Of Finality

When every door before this has slammed in your face, the choice was taken from you.

But by the time you get to the last door in the hallway, you are frozen, paralyzed with fear and unable to make a choice.

That fear is the choice.

And you will watch this one slowly and silently close.

It won’t slam shut.

You won’t feel the wind of the door swinging shut.

You won’t be startled by the sound.

It will be gentle, calm, and quiet.

You’ll hear the latch click, and the deadbolt lock into place.

You’ll stare at the door in front of you for a long time, and feel the weight of the decision sink in.

The hallway will be silent.

Lonely.

Still.

You will be left with one question:

Why couldn’t I just move toward the door?
